Day 8 of PURPOSE – Choose to be a cheerleader at work

At workplaces these days, we see a lot of edgy people who are worried about their prospect and business opportunities. According to David Granirer, we often try to control our reaction to the work situation in which we find ourselves. The big question for both individuals and organizations is: how do you keep up spirits, continue to work efficiently, and sustain health and wisdom in a crazy-making situation?

Michael Kerr – the workplace energizer – is "Creating inspiring, healthy and more productive workplaces by putting humour to work!"

David Granirer tells you more, how do you help employees, who have little or no control over external events, survive a crazy-making situation? Organizations need to encourage employees to take control over the one aspect of the situation they do control - how they choose to respond to it.

So what stops you using your sense of humor at work?

If you can not find happiness with your work, find new work, that matches your vision.

Being a cheerleader at work is important, being a cheerliader in life is a bigger purpose.

Okay, I posted under the altruism day 6 so check that out too. Okay, so we need to tell david Granirer the author to become part of iEvolution and he will get the answer. People aren't cheerleaders at work for the most part because there is no sense of community. Peple want a sense of belonging and when they feel like they belong they can be themselves and find humor in their work and in their life. Hierarchies stop people from feeling like they're part of a community, and yes whle you are in tha situation you can choose how you respond to a situation, but most of the time the rifght choice according to the company is their choice. I was the master of choosing to respond the right way when I worked for a bueracratic structure. I was so good at it I was able to change my personality on a dime. So yes we can choose how to respond, but its better to respond authentically and if that doesnt fit the workplace your in, then find a new workplace. And if you dont decide to find a new workplce the universe will decide for you,. It may take longer, or it could just end quickly, and abruptly, and not in the fahion you want, but hey at least it ended and you can chosse to do what you want with your life. So at a surface level thats my response, and I have to do David justice and read a little bit more into his book, becaause I'm sure I could learn something. Great topic.....So Maryanee and Irving...share with us some examples of how ur doing it......I want to learn from everyone

What do you have to say about a Fisherman who spends the entire day in fish market not because he loves the smell but because he wants to sell his stock. Ok, what about a foreman in a production unit responsible for proper functioning of generator that is deafening all the time? And about that mine worker who goes miles inside earth to earn his living? Do they have choice to change their work or for that matter the ‘place’ of work? I don’t think so or else there would be no land miner left on this earth by the end of 2015. This is what probably David Garnier is trying to say – if one has less control on external situation then it is must to control how they choose to respond – responding positively is what the mantra is.
Yes, indeed having a community kind of set up is very advantageous in many ways. While I am writing all this I got reminded of FISH PHILOSOPHY. Let me share this link http://www.charthouse.com/content.aspx?nodeid=1066 that will give some idea about what the ‘FISH CULTURE’ is all about. This works for me. Please let me know if you find this link useful and interesting.

Ps: I posted under Day 6 as well so don’t forget to check that out too. :-)

Having lived in Seattle for 23 years I had the opportunity to see the fish guys at work and up close. The interesting thing that I observed is that the team makes it work together. I believe one person alone can start or create the energy, but it is the willingness of the group to participate and perpetuate the energy and fun is where the magic is.

If you have not checked out the link that Meetu put in his comments, go back and look. Fish Culture is a wonderful way to go through life. The books are great, the videos are great. I am looking forward to the next LeaderFish book.

Meetu, Thank you for reminding us of the value.

If you are in Seattle the Pike Place Market is a stop you will enjoy, and chances are they will make your day.

Moe gave me some great advice that has helped me become a better cheerleader in my business and in my personal life, and it has nothing to do with being a cheerleader at all, or so I though until this moment. He said they speak 80% of the time, have a conversation, and inspire them.

When he shared the information he was talking about my client meetings, which I had always though of as interviews, now I think about them as conversations. As I practiced speaking less I found myself being interested in what they were saying, as they speak more and feel they are listened to the inspiration seems to flow effortlessly.

The result is client conversations are much more productive, I gain wonderful insights about what is important to them, and as the relationship is built we have more fun.

Ok this really works, so move those thoughts into my relationships with my assistants and partners. Same good results, they are more productive, they are inspired to bring new ideas to our business, and we are having more fun.

Last week as our family gathered to mourn the loss of our 16 year old niece. I found the pattern I created at work naturally transcended into my personal life. My 15 year old son learned to talk about his thoughts and feeling because I had learned to listen. I though he was a naturally quiet shy person and he is, I though I was listening, I was but not enough. What I found was that he did not learn to talk, he knew how. I was so busy trying to pull him through life, much the same way I tried to pull my clients and employees through a process or a meeting that I was the one doing all the talking, I though I was helping the conversation, making it easy for them, filling in silence, being funny or whatever. As I listened to my son I became aware of how I had changed. What I realize now is that learning to listen more and talk less has helped me be a better cheer leader. Conversations are richer, people feel valued, and I am inspired by them and there greatness.

Thank you Moe.

Alright, now the game is on. Finally some lengthy responses with some emotions. Thanks Maryanne for Sharing your story with us. Great experience to learn from and thanks Meetu for your wisdom and question. We all have a purpose right here right now. That purpose doent mean we can go ahead and make a radical change right now and decide to do something that is like jumping off a cliff. However we can begin to do one small thing each day that will help change our habitual way of thinkng. Because our thoughts are what actually determine our actions, which determine our results. So when I say someone should change their work, I mean it but I mean you change your work in your mind one small step at a time. The fisherman who doesn't like the smell of fish doesn't need to wake up one day and quit. He can wake up one day and say today I like the exhausting feeling I get at the end of the day by putting in a hard days work. When I used to work demolition to help put myself through college, I didn't like the nails in the foot, the roofs falling on my head or the foreman yelling at me, but there was something fulfilling about feeling exhausted at the end of the day and working in the camraderie of the guys there. That was better than 'selling my stock' or getting a paycheck, even though the paycheck was necessary. And as long as I could appreciate that part of it (the camraderie and exhausting feeling), the universe would open up opportunities to me like....... the following year when it was time for me to be foreman. Becaue I had that appreciation for that part of the job and others didn't I was presented with new opportunites. The truth is there will always be demolition workers, becaue not everyomte understands that they have the ability to choose their own thoughts. Freedom in my definition means the abilty to choose. I believe we all have freedom of thought. And maybe one day everyone will learn that they have the ability to choose their thoughts. And when they do, perhaps the miner gets a promotion or he learns to teach his son a new trade. Hot only exists cause we compare it to cold. Thats the law of relativity. So, perhaps the fisherman or the miner can realize that there are people in other countries without jobs and start to apprciate their job and feel prosperous and just that act of feeling prosperous and feeling appreciative will open up new opportunities for them.Good only exists in comparison to bad. In fact everythning in life "just is" until we compare it to something. Nothing in life HAS ANY INTRINSIC MEANING EXCEPT THE MEANING WE GIVE IT. iTS MIDNIGHT IN sAN dIGO AND ITS LIGHTS OUT FR ME. UNTIL WE BLOG AGAIN. PASSION NEVER SLEEPS

Thank you, Ted. You explained the purpose very well. I am clearer on this.
