Day 30 of PURPOSE – Identity Crisis

What do you do? Stop and think for a moment - you're standing in line at starbucks, having a great conversation with the person in front of you, when she asks you what you do? How do you respond - Are you a Financial Advisor? A mortgage professional? A Financial Planner? An entrepreneur? I could go on and on, I think you get the picture. I've often wondered why so many of us continue to be obsessed with job titles. Do you think people care more about what you do OR who you are?

Think of your heros; why were you drawn to them? Was it their job description or the difference they made in the world. When Bill Gates said that he would put a computer on every desk, he didn't simply create software; he changed the very nature of work. When Pierre Omidyar created E-bay, he didn't create an online person-to- person trading community; he created an entirely new marketplace, then added a bank, Paypal. Then a communication device, Skype. Today, E-bay has 180 million registered users, growing at 35% a year.

So what ideas are you fighting for? What’s your BIG purpose that will make the world a better place? Think about it and the next time someone asks you what you do - Answer why you do it instead. Happy weekend!

What someone does for this world is more important than what their job title is. Unfortunately, we are identified by what we do for a living more than who we are and what we believe. A used car salesman isn't given much respect, but what if that salesman gives 15% of his earnings to the church, is on the PTA, and spends a week every summer in poor nations building homes? I really like Lee Brower's response to what do you do. He said "I Optimize Assets" If someone asks, what I do, I should ask them how much time they have because telling them that my job is to make the world a better place might take a while.
